The current state of the environment is already forcing the wider use of fuels and energy production technologies that best meet environmental requirements.

This applies primarily to the disposal of waste production, unconventional and renewable energy sources.

Sawmill 25 strictly complies with all requirements of the Russian federation environmental legislation. The company actively seeks to minimize the harmful effects on the environment through continuous improvement of the technologies used. Modernization of production is aimed not only at obtaining an economic effect, but also at reducing energy consumption, minimizing harmful emissions, preventing and eliminating other environmental risks.

The project of “Sawmill 25” production modernization is aimed at creating a modern, highly efficient, environmentally friendly, waste-free production of high-quality timber and biofuels based on deep wood processing and is being implemented without additional negative impact on the environment.

Bark, which is formed during the production process, is mainly burnt in CHP and boiler house to generate electricity and heat for the company’s own needs. At the same time, new technologies used in the sawmill production make it possible to obtain wood waste with the natural moisture content acceptable for use as fuel without additional processing.

In 2012, the project “Production of fuel pellets from wood waste” was registered in the secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change as a joint implementation project. “According to the UNFCCC document, reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from the project implementation from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2012 are estimated at 215,362 tons of CO2 equivalent.” Also earlier in 2007, the project of Sawmill 25 for utilization of bark and wood waste for energy production at the enterprise was registered.

In addition, the company constantly carries out industrial environmental monitoring. This is a set of activities carried out by the environmental service of the enterprise, related to the verification of compliance with the requirements of environmental legislation in the field of waste management, sanitary rules and standards, and sanitary and epidemiological requirements. Production control is divided into instrumental, operational and planned control.

Instrumental control is carried out under an agreement with an accredited laboratory that has the right to conduct analytical work with the objects of control: water, soil, production and consumption waste, etc.

Operational control is an element of internal audit, which is regularly carried out by persons responsible for the implementation of industrial environmental monitoring.

In 2013, “Sawmill 25” became the winner of the 10th All-Russian Timber Industry Award in the nomination “Green Energy”.

In November 2013, “Sawmill 25” was awarded a diploma of the Russian industrial and environmental forum “The Best Environmentally Responsible Enterprise of the Arkhangelsk Region in 2013”.

The company regularly takes part in environmental campaigns organized by the Office of Rosprirodnadzor (Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resource Usage), Dvinsko-Pechora RBO, etc.

“Sawmill 25” was thanked by the Department of Rosprirodnadzor (Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resource Usage) in the North-West Federal District for participating in the action “Water objects – clean shores and moorings”.

In 2014, the company was awarded by the Office of Rosprirodnadzor (Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resource Usage) in the Arkhangelsk region.
More than 40 technical specialists were trained in the course “Ensuring environmental safety when working in the field of hazardous waste.” and implement their knowledge in their daily work, complying with the requirements of environmental legislation of the Russian Federation.

Complying with the requirements of federal legislation, the company’s management and the environmental service were trained under the program “Ensuring environmental safety by managers and specialists of environmental services and environmental control systems”.

In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation 2017 was declared as the Year of Ecology and Specially Protected Natural Territories.
According to the approved plan of activities for the year of ecology and the year of the PAs, two activities of Sawmill 25 were included as planned for implementation in 2017.

1. Construction of a water-heating boiler house based on bark and wood waste burning equipment with a modern gas-cleaning system, Arkhangelsk

A systematic reduction of pollutants emissions into the atmosphere can be traced. In addition, the amount of emissions of solid substances into the atmosphere is reduced, including suspended solids, inorganic dust, soot, wood dust, abrasive dust. First of all, this is due to the efficient operation of the gas cleaning equipment and the scheduled maintenance of such equipment.

2. Introduction of the dry sorting line for timber, Arkhangelsk

As a result of the modernization, the discharge of pollutants from the forest basin to the Maymaksa channel of the Northern Dvina river is terminated.

In 2017, Sawmill 25 started the implementation of the environmental protection and social project «Ecolyata» on the basis of Secondary School No. 55 named after the hero of the Russian Federation Anoshenkov Andrey Ivanovich. Within the framework of the project, young environmentalists attend large industrial enterprises, participate in environmental competitions, community work days, environmental exhibitions.

In 2018-2019, the company also continues to participate in the «Ecolyata» project.

In addition, “Sawmill 25” does not stand aside and takes an active part, including providing sponsorship, in numerous social and environmental events, including “Winter’s Tale” and “Snowdrop”.

During October 2017, a number of activities took place for the release of young trout in the Onega River grown at the Solzensky Production and Experimental Plant of the Northern Branch of the Glavrybvod Federal State Enterprise.

As part of creating a corporate system for accounting and managing greenhouse gas emissions for each carbon project, monitoring procedures for reducing greenhouse gas emissions were developed and approved in accordance with ISO 14064 Part 2. The regulation defines emission sources, monitoring points, data collection and transmission procedures, calculation methods, the procedure for the preparation of reports and verification.

In accordance with the developed regulations, Sawmill 25 annually releases reports on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with the requirements of ISO 14064 Part 2.

For the purposes of voluntary reporting on GHG emissions, the GHG Emission Inventory Regulations have been developed and approved in accordance with the requirements of ISO 14064 Part 1. At the end of the year, the company prepares a report on greenhouse gas emissions.

The main emissions are associated with fuel combustion in mobile units (Scope1) and with the purchase of electricity from the grid. It should be noted that own GHG emissions are fully compensated by prevented emissions from wood pellet buyers.

Currently, Sawmill 25 has developed a corporate climate strategy for the period of up to 2030.

In 2018, the company for its great contribution to the upbringing and environmental education of the younger generation was noted with gratitude from the Arkhangelsk Regional Branch of the All-Russian Public Organization “All-Russian Society for the Conservation of Nature”.
